(Feb. 1, 2023) – Amwins, a global distributor of specialty insurance products and services, has announced a new minority investment in Rhodian , an Australian start-up MGA incubator whose focus includes building a network of successful, independent underwriting agencies powered by Rhodian’s technology provider, capacity and shared services. With a strong shared-equity ethos, Rhodian has developed a framework that empowers agency leaders to have ownership of their brand, product and delivery to market, with the engine room of Rhodian driving their speed to market and growth trajectory.\n\n*“We are excited to partner with one of the world’s leading independent insurance networks,” said Simon Lightbody, chief executive officer at Rhodian. “Amwins has a strong and impressive culture, which aligns with our vision. We believe that together we can ensure the Australian agency market continues on its trajectory toward being the strongest supplier of niche products to broker markets.”*\n\nRhodian was born out of a response to the ever-changing Australian agency environment. Barriers for newcomers to the market are becoming significantly more challenging, meaning a reduced flow of entrepreneurial talent entering the market. Rhodian’s goal is to empower these future industry leaders to build agencies that will deliver to the intermediated market with strong products, new technology and a transparent data sharing philosophy that drives positive change.\n\n*“Amwins brings significant expertise and experience in the development of an MGA network to the table,” said Scott Purviance, chief executive officer at Amwins. “Alongside shared cultural values and an independent structure, this partnership provides access to qualified capacity across multiple product lines, putting Rhodian in a prime position for accelerated and sustainable growth.”*\n\nThere is a new wave of insurance leaders wanting to step up and out of their current environments to embark on the journey of building successful underwriting agencies. This journey requires investment, structure and support in order to be powerful and compelling to the broker market. The hard market environment coupled with more stringent regulatory reporting requirements will dictate that only the most structured agencies will be able to thrive in the marketplace.\n\n*“Underwriting agencies are playing an ever-increasing role in delivering strong insurance products to Australia’s broker networks,” said Peter Takos, chief underwriting officer at Rhodian. “Part of our focus is to match both domestic and international capacity with the strongest agency product offering, ensuring the evolving needs of broker clients can be met in a sustainable way.” *\n\nMark Cody, managing director of Amwins Global Risks, said: “This is another great example of Amwins Global Risks and Amwins working together to bring new and exciting MGA opportunities to the market. AGR is one of the largest London brokers specialising in delegated authorities and capacity building, with well over $1 billion of premium flow annually. We are truly a global broker, and this provides great diversification in territory and class of business. We are excited to work with Rhodian and assist them as they look to build out this innovative business, attracting ‘best in class’ talent.”\n"},"title":"Amwins Partners with Rhodian","openGraph":{"description":{"plain":"Amwins, a global distributor of specialty insurance products and services, has announced a new minority investment in Rhodian , an Australian start-up MGA incubator whose focus includes building a network of successful, independent underwriting agencies powered by Rhodian’s technology provider, capacity and shared services. \n"},"image":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1675402620/rhodian/image-asset/amwins-rhodian_image__AMWINS_RHODIAN_gzddoz.webp.webp","url2x":null,"thumbnails":{"card":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_480/v1675402620/rhodian/image-asset/amwins-rhodian_image__AMWINS_RHODIAN_gzddoz.webp.webp","url2x":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_960/v1675402620/rhodian/image-asset/amwins-rhodian_image__AMWINS_RHODIAN_gzddoz.webp.webp"},"bubble":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_64/v1675402620/rhodian/image-asset/amwins-rhodian_image__AMWINS_RHODIAN_gzddoz.webp.webp","url2x":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_128/v1675402620/rhodian/image-asset/amwins-rhodian_image__AMWINS_RHODIAN_gzddoz.webp.webp"}}}},"type":{"id":"65d566d1f7d2d452331bf0b5","name":"Press Release","slug":"press-release-1","__typename":"PostType"},"published":"2023-04-30T22:59:07.00","authors":[{"openGraph":{"image":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1675399443/rhodian/person/tessa-chirnside_photo__Tessa_Chirnside-LoRezLinkedinWideShot_copy_uaf1be.webp.webp","url2x":null}},"_schema":{"label":"Person","pluralLabel":"People"},"id":"65d566ccf7d2d452331bf076","name":"Tessa Chirnside","slug":"tessa-chirnside","path":"/people/tessa-chirnside","organisation":{"id":"65d566c0f7d2d452331beffe","name":"Rhodian"},"linkedin":"https://www.linkedin.com/in/tessa-chirnside/ ","photo":{"id":"image_rhodian/person/tessa-chirnside_photo__Tessa_Chirnside-LoRezLinkedinWideShot_copy_uaf1be.webp","url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1675399443/rhodian/person/tessa-chirnside_photo__Tessa_Chirnside-LoRezLinkedinWideShot_copy_uaf1be.webp.webp","url2x":null,"type":"image/webp"}}]}},{"data":{"id":"65d566d0f7d2d452331bf0a9","name":"Halo, Property and Liability Specialists","path":"/posts/halo-property-and-liability-specialists","slug":"halo-property-and-liability-specialists","__typename":"Post","_schema":{"label":"Post","pluralLabel":"Posts"},"intro":{"plain":"We chat with Halo Underwriting's CEO, Peter Takos on the launch of Halo Underwriting and why he felt now was the right time for a Property and Liability agency that is focused on complex risks.\n","text":"We chat with [Halo](https://www.halounderwriting.com.au) Underwriting's CEO, Peter Takos on the launch of Halo Underwriting and why he felt now was the right time for a Property and Liability agency that is focused on complex risks."},"content":{"text":"**Why create [Halo](https://halounderwriting.com.au)?**\n\nAgencies are a growing space in the Australian market. This growth is being driven by the increasingly restrictive appetite of insurers and their strong preference to transact electronically. Halo is a response to brokers that are crying out for consistent placement performance and quality service across their entire SME & Mid-Market portfolios, not just their automated vanilla risks. We want to help our partners deliver solutions to their clients promptly and with the professionalism they deserve. By being independent and having respected senior underwriters that have the trust of our capacity providers, we are well-placed to engage the market and have confidence in our power to deliver.\n\n**What gap in the market is [Halo](https://halounderwriting.com.au) looking to fill?** \n\nHalo is a solution-based agency. We take on risks other insurers are walking away from and create sustainable, long-term solutions for the end client. Insurance has always been a people business and we believe it always should be. Our values drive performance through relationships and exceptional expertise. Australian businesses need cover, and we intend to be part of the Insurance environment that is striving to make that happen.\n\n**What can brokers look forward to when dealing with [Halo](https://halounderwriting.com.au)?**\n\nExperienced decision makers. We have the customer at the center of everything we do and are establishing a team that has the authority and experience to create the best solution for our clients. Working closely with our broker partners, we want to capaitalise on their knowledge of the client and together bring sustainable insurance solutions to the table. If Halo can’t provide the solution, we will work with brokers to help them find the right fit for their needs elsewhere, that's part of having brokers as our core focus.\n\n**What industry trends do you see that create opportunities for [Halo](https://halounderwriting.com.au)?**\n\nA hardening insurance cycle certainly creates opportunities for Halo. With a focus on underwriting complex risks, we are relying on our extensive experience in the market, our technical capability and our underlying appetite for business to sustainably deliver solutions in this market environment. \n\nAnother growing trend across the large insurers is the push for brokers to use electronic portals, yet those portals are becoming increasingly narrow. With Halo having a focus on industry sectors such as the EPS space, hospitality, property owners, industrial and more, we work hard to deliver where others can't. The technology we use for the more automated business is tailor-made, so we also know the user experience for our brokers will be excellent.\n\n**What are your views on the availability of capacity for property and liability lines in the next 12-24 months** \n\nIt is only going to get tougher. With insurers constantly looking at the bottom line and expenses in this economic climate, they will either continue to increase pricing, or decline the more complex risks that have not been historically profitable. We are here to bridge that gap for our broker partners and their clients."},"title":null,"openGraph":{"description":{"plain":"An introduction to Halo Underwriting. My first introduction to the sector was as an Underwriting Assistant in an agency specialising in Property and Liability Insurance. Early on, I was fortunate to receive mentorship and training from senior liability underwriters who had extensive knowledge and who guided me along the career path of becoming a liability underwriter. I haven't deviated from this path and the industry has offered me the opportunity to not only grow as a professional, but also offered stability and flexibility as my family has grown.\n\n**What attracted you to Halo as a career step? What’s the most important factor when you think about your workplace/career?**\n\nI was attracted to Halo because of the opportunity to be part of the start-up journey and (another) chance to work with a group of talented and experienced people whom I respect and admire. One of the most important factors for me when considering a workplace is ensuring that there is the possibility for my own personal growth and career development, whilst also maintaining a healthy work-life balance. \n\n**The Halo proposition is all about having an ‘appetite for business’. What does this mean and how do you deliver on it personally / as a team?**\n\nTo me, having an ‘appetite for business’ means that as Halo we have a strong desire to be an underwriting agency that is always open to opportunities and new ideas. We understand that certain risks are becoming increasingly difficult to place. We have the knowledge and willingness to understand a risk and assist with finding a solution for our broker partners.\n\n**One of the hardest things to orchestrate in a small business is culture. As a key leader within Halo, how will you be helping to drive the development of a positive culture?**\n\nI hope to help Halo drive the development of a positive culture by communicating effectively and honestly, facilitating a safe and trusting environment and providing opportunities for and supporting the development of all of our team members.\n\n**So far, what has been the most rewarding aspect of helping build out the Halo offering / what are you most looking forward to?**\n\nThe opportunity to experience and learn how an underwriting agency is brought to life, from concept through to launch, has been great. It has been a challenging but exciting learning curve, and provided alot of insight into areas (such as technology build), that I had not previously been exposed to.\n\nI am excited to work alongside the Halo team as we strive to grow, and I really look forward to continuing to develop my relationships with our broker partners. Like most people, I fell into insurance! Claims gave me a good grounding and allowed me understand what insurance was really all about, and the impact it has on people. Underwriting is a great area to work in, the environment is always changing and throwing up new challenges to think about. As an underwriter, I’ve always had an eye for growth and fostering relationships, as well as trying to balance this with responsible and diligent underwriting for quality business.\n\n**What attracted you to Halo as a career step? What’s the most important factor when you think about your workplace/career?**\n\nI had been in my previous role almost eight years and was well settled, however when the opportunity came up to be part of something from the very start, it was too good to pass up. The challenge to help build and shape a new brand is an exciting process – it was the right time for me and I’ve absolutely loved it. I think an important factor for me is helping to create a legacy that I can be proud of. Insurance can be such a numbers game and transactional at times, so to help build a brand and culture that is centered around people and relationships is a really motivating prospect.\n\n**The Halo proposition is all about having an ‘appetite for business’. What does this mean and how do you deliver on it personally / as a team?**\n\nOf course, being new, growth is a key part of our mindset. We are here to write good business and focus on what we are good at. The proposition is an important one, and it is one we live and breathe every day. We are here for the long term, to build solid relationships with our broker network and thriving partnerships. Words can ring hollow unless you really believe in what you are doing. The key takeaway is that this is not just about year one, this is about what we want to be going forward for many years to come. An appetite for business is something that will always be part of our DNA.\n\n**Can brokers really expect something different from the Halo team? Which gaps can you fill for them?**\n\nI think with all the rapid changes in technology today, we can lose sight of what’s really important and what drives commercial relationships. Technology is merely a tool to help us do things more efficiently, however it shouldn’t replace the human element. Really it is just basic ‘101’ stuff – we strive to be accessible and doing simple things like answering the phone and having conversations is important cog in our day to day business. Portals and brochures don’t build relationships, people do. Another key aspect is simply drawing on our experience and expertise to understand and underwrite a risk – not every single risk fits into a box. You need to assess and get an understand of a single risk on it’s own merits in order to underwrite it correctly.\n\n**As a key leader within Halo, how do you think internal culture impacts the experience of your clients?**\n\nThis is something I’ve always been aware of. How an organisation conducts itself internally, and how peers treat each other definately projects further and impacts our external relationships. Given we are at a very early growth stage at Halo, we have to wear many different hats and we very much have a mindset of finding solutions and problem solving, both internally and on behalf of our clients. It’s also about holding ourselves accountable too. Being accountable and transparent on a daily basis is important in building trust with the market.\n\n**What have you found the most challenging aspect to helping build the Halo offering from scratch?**\n\nI think the most challenging aspect for me has been fostering an open mindset and learning to figure things out on the go. Given where we are at in our lifecycle, I have to be across different day to day challenges and work closely within the team to find outcomes. This has obviously been a big change from what I have been use to. It is cliché, but it is true that when you step outside your comfort zone, you truly do achieve personal growth.\n\n**What has been the most rewarding aspect so far / what are you most looking forward to?**\n\nWhat has been most rewarding so far has been simply to see how far we have and come and what we have achieved since July last year. It has been incredibly busy, so I don’t really pause for thought often, but to think about it does bring significant satisfaction. In saying that, I’m not one to take the foot off the accelerator and I am looking forward to what we can achieve going into year two, as we become more established in the market.\n\n\n\n\n\n"},"title":null,"openGraph":{"description":{"plain":"We checked in with Senior Property Underwriter Jeff Miller, to understand a little bit more about what makes him tick, and his journey so far with Halo Underwriting.\n"},"image":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1709612882/rhodian/banner/jeff-miller_image__Jeff_Miller_Header_c2kflr.webp","url2x":null,"thumbnails":{"card":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_480/v1709612882/rhodian/banner/jeff-miller_image__Jeff_Miller_Header_c2kflr.webp","url2x":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_960/v1709612882/rhodian/banner/jeff-miller_image__Jeff_Miller_Header_c2kflr.webp"},"bubble":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_64/v1709612882/rhodian/banner/jeff-miller_image__Jeff_Miller_Header_c2kflr.webp","url2x":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_128/v1709612882/rhodian/banner/jeff-miller_image__Jeff_Miller_Header_c2kflr.webp"}}}},"type":{"id":"65d566d1f7d2d452331bf0b3","name":"Interview","slug":"interview-1","__typename":"PostType"},"published":"2024-03-04T00:00:00.00","authors":[{"openGraph":{"image":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1692763893/rhodian/person/jeff-miller_photo__Jeff_Miller-HiRezTooBigForWeb_xmawsm.jpg","url2x":null}},"_schema":{"label":"Person","pluralLabel":"People"},"id":"65d566ccf7d2d452331bf06b","name":"Jeff Miller","slug":"jeff-miller","path":"/people/jeff-miller","organisation":{"id":"65d566c0f7d2d452331beffa","name":"Halo"},"linkedin":"linkedin.com/in/jeff-miller-b6121530","photo":{"id":"image_rhodian/person/jeff-miller_photo__Jeff_Miller-HiRezTooBigForWeb_xmawsm","url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1692763893/rhodian/person/jeff-miller_photo__Jeff_Miller-HiRezTooBigForWeb_xmawsm.jpg","url2x":null,"type":"image/jpeg"}}]}},{"data":{"id":"65e675d6d6534a5acb59f7bd","name":"Elevating your Insurance Submissions: Strategies for Brokers","path":"/posts/elevating-your-insurance-submissions-strategies-for-brokers","slug":"elevating-your-insurance-submissions-strategies-for-brokers","__typename":"Post","_schema":{"label":"Post","pluralLabel":"Posts"},"intro":{"plain":"In the nuanced world of property insurance, the effectiveness of a broker's submission can profoundly influence the underwriting decision-making process. This conversation is an opportunity to confirm the risk's alignment with the underwriter's appetite, discuss pricing expectations, and outline the timeline. Establishing this direct line of communication early on not only clarifies the submission's context, but also builds a rapport that can streamline the entire underwriting process.\n\n**Detailed and Comprehensive Slips**\n\nFollowing the initial phone call, the submission of a detailed and comprehensive slip becomes crucial. This document should encapsulate essential information such as construction details, the nature of occupancy, implemented fire and burglary protection measures, and accurate valuations. Incorporating a five-year claims history, with emphasis on significant losses and the measures taken to mitigate future risks, further enriches the submission. Such thoroughness ensures that underwriters have a clear and complete understanding of the risk profile.\n\n**Importance of Accurate and Updated Valuations**\n\nThe precision of building valuations and coverage figures is paramount in insurance submissions. Accurate and current valuations not only facilitate proper risk assessment but also underscore the broker's diligence in representing the risk. This accuracy supports the underwriter in providing coverage that is both appropriate and competitive.\n\n**Emphasising Post-Claim Risk Mitigation**\n\nSubmissions that detail efforts to mitigate risk post-claim reflect a proactive approach to risk management. Whether through enhanced security protocols, structural improvements, or operational adjustments, these measures demonstrate a commitment to reducing future risks, which is a positive indicator for underwriters.\n\n**The Value of Risk Surveys and Recommendations**\n\nIncorporating risk surveys and recommendations, particularly for complex risks, significantly augments the depth of a submission. These insights offer underwriters a detailed perspective on the risk's nuances and the proactive steps taken to mitigate them, facilitating a more informed evaluation.\n\n**Transparent Presentation of Potential Issues**\n\nTransparency about any issues or challenges with the account is essential for fostering trust and understanding between brokers and underwriters. "},"content":{"text":"**Halo turned one last month... looking back over the first year of Halo’s life, how do you feel?**\n\nReflecting on the first 12 months of Halo’s life makes me really proud. The journey has been a testament to the dedication, hard work, and resilience of our incredible team. Amidst the turbulence of June trading, we've not only navigated challenges but also seized opportunities, demonstrating our commitment to delivering exceptional service. \n\nThe unwavering support and collaboration from our broker community has been invaluable, fueling our success. Together, we've built a strong foundation, and I am excited about the promising future ahead.\n\n**What were some of the curve balls you were thrown, and how did you overcome them as a team?**\n\nHalo's first year has been both exhilarating and enlightening, though not entirely as expected! We anticipated challenges, but the shifting dynamics of the insurance market added complexity that tested our resilience and ability to adapt. \n\nThe changing dynamics of market conditions required us to swiftly recalibrate our strategies. Rather than seeing it as a setback, we viewed it as an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to our clients and broker community. We focused on delivering quality service to our broker network, ensuring that we continued to meet their needs despite the market fluctuations.\n\nThroughout these unexpected turns, our team’s hard work and unity have been pivotal. By maintaining open communication, fostering a culture of innovation, and staying true to our core values, we’ve turned potential negatives into positives, reinforcing Halo’s capabilities and setting the stage for continued growth.\n\n**The Australian Underwriting landscape is rapidly evolving, how do you think this will affect Halo and what are you doing to future proof the business?**\n\nTechnology is at the forefront of our efforts to future-proof the business. We are investing in our underwriting platforms and data analytics tools to enhance our decision-making processes, improve efficiency, and deliver even better service to our clients and broker community. Product development is another key focus. We are continuously innovating and expanding our product offerings to meet the changing needs of the market. \n\nOur ongoing development of a Business Package product is testament to our commitment to providing comprehensive solutions that address emerging risks and trends.\nStaff retention is equally critical to our long-term success. We are dedicated to fostering a positive and supportive work environment that encourages professional growth and development. By offering ongoing training, competitive benefits, and opportunities for career advancement, we aim to retain top talent and ensure that our team remains motivated and equipped to drive Halo’s success.\n\nBy leveraging technology, prioritising innovative product development, and focusing on staff retention, we are confident that Halo is well-positioned to navigate the evolving landscape and continue delivering exceptional value to our clients and partners.\n\n**When you set out, you and the team were hoping to make an impact with your service levels. Has this resonated with the broker community? How have you delivered?** \n\nFrom the outset, our goal at Halo was to make a significant impact with our service levels, and I’m proud to say this has resonated strongly with the broker community. We have been relentless in our pursuit of excellence, ensuring that our brokers receive the support and responsiveness they need to succeed.\nWe delivered on this commitment in several key ways:\n\n1.\tPersonalised Service: Each broker relationship is unique, and we’ve tailored our approach to meet individual needs. Our underwriters work closely with brokers, providing customised solutions and prompt responses to queries and requests.\n\n2.\tAccessibility: We prioritise being accessible and approachable. Our brokers know they can reach us easily, whether it’s for a quick question or a detailed discussion about a complex case. This open line of communication has built trust and strengthened our partnerships.\n\n3.\tContinuous Feedback Loop: We actively seek and act on feedback from our brokers. Regular check-ins and surveys help us understand their evolving needs and areas where we can improve. This commitment to continuous improvement ensures that we stay aligned with broker expectations.\n\n**Moving forward, for your next 12 months, where do you see the development opportunities for Halo? What’s the goal?** \n\nLooking ahead to the next 12 months, we see numerous exciting development opportunities for Halo. Our goal is to build on the strong foundation we've established and continue driving growth and innovation.\n\nOne key area of focus will be expanding our product offerings. We are committed to developing new and enhanced insurance solutions that address emerging market needs and provide our brokers with a competitive edge. Our ongoing work on the Business package product is just the beginning, and we are eager to explore other areas where we can make a significant impact.\n\nTechnology will remain a central pillar of our strategy. We plan to further integrate advanced data analytics and digital tools to streamline our operations and improve our service delivery. By leveraging technology, we aim to provide our brokers with even faster, more accurate, and more efficient support.\n\nStaff development and retention will also be a priority. We recognise that our team is our greatest asset, and we are dedicated to investing in their growth and well-being. Through continuous training, professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment, we aim to empower our team to reach their full potential.\n\nAdditionally, we will continue to strengthen our relationships with our broker community. By maintaining open communication, soliciting feedback, and fostering a collaborative spirit, we aim to deepen our partnerships and ensure that our brokers feel valued and supported.\n\nUltimately, our goal for the next year is to enhance our position as a trusted and innovative underwriting agency. We are excited about the future and are committed to delivering exceptional value to our clients, brokers, and partners. Together, we will continue to build on our success and create new opportunities for growth and prosperity.\n\n\n**For anyone hoping to start their own Underwriting Agency, what would your advice be?** \n\nFor anyone considering starting their own underwriting agency, here are a few pieces of advice based on our journey with Halo:\n\n1.\tPlay to your strengths: Leveraging a robust platform like Rhodian can make a significant difference. "},"content":{"text":"**As a seasoned liability underwriter, what have been some key highlights of your career in the insurance industry?**\n\nLooking back on my career so far, one of the most rewarding parts has been seeing the industry evolve—particularly the rise in opportunities and representation for women in leadership. It's a shift that inspires real pride. Just as meaningful has been watching the careers of those I started out with flourish. Seeing former peers grow into respected professionals across the industry is a reminder of how far we’ve all come. The journey continues, and I’m energised by what lies ahead—for both the industry and the people driving it forward.\n\n**What attracted you to Halo as a career step? What’s the most important factor when you think about your workplace/career?**\n\nJoining Halo was a decision shaped by trust, respect, and shared values. Having previously worked with many of the leaders here, I knew I was stepping into a space guided by integrity, vision, and experience. What made the opportunity truly stand out was the autonomy and trust they offered from day one—a rare and motivating combination.\n\nAs I reflect on what matters most in any role, it’s clear that cultural alignment outweighs any financial incentive. Being part of a team that values collaboration, support, and authenticity has been key. It’s in this kind of environment—where people feel seen, supported, and empowered—that the best work happens. And that’s exactly what drew me to Halo, and what keeps me energised for what’s ahead.\n\n**The Halo proposition is all about having an ‘appetite for business’. What does this mean and how do you deliver on it personally / as a team?**\n\nAn appetite for business, to me, is grounded in proactive, solution-oriented underwriting. At Halo, this mindset drives how we engage with our broker partners—working collaboratively to understand the nuances of each risk and exploring every viable avenue to deliver value.\n\nRather than defaulting to a “no,” we focus on finding the “yes”—seeking ways to support brokers and clients through open dialogue, creative thinking, and a deep understanding of their needs. This approach not only fosters stronger relationships but also reinforces our commitment to being a partner that prioritises outcomes over obstacles.\n\nBy embedding this philosophy into our underwriting practices, we ensure that our appetite isn’t just about risk selection—it’s about building trust, delivering solutions, and strengthening our role as an enabler of business success.\n\n**So far, what has been the most rewarding aspect of contributing to the Halo offering / what are you most looking forward to in future?**\n\nJoining Halo at such a pivotal point—on the back of its strong early success and clear upward momentum—has been incredibly rewarding. The energy and drive within the business are tangible, and it’s exciting to be part of a team that’s rapidly establishing itself as a respected player in the market.\n\nLooking ahead, my focus is on contributing to Halo’s continued growth by helping to deepen broker relationships, strengthen our underwriting capability, and support the development of scalable, sustainable solutions. As we expand our footprint, maintaining our agility and commitment to service excellence will be key to long-term success.\n\nEqually important is investing in our people and culture—ensuring that we remain a collaborative, high-performing team where individuals feel empowered to grow and succeed. By combining market insight, technical strength, and a values-led approach, I’m confident that Halo is well-positioned to build on its momentum and shape a lasting impact across the industry.\n\n**For anyone considering a career in insurance and starting out as an insurance underwriter, what tips would you have to offer?**\n\nDon’t Compare Journeys: Success in this industry is rarely linear. Everyone progresses at their own pace, and comparing your path to others can often lead to unnecessary pressure. Focus on your own growth and development—it’s a long game.\n\nFind the Right Mentor: Seek out a mentor whose values, experience, and leadership style resonate with you. A strong mentor relationship can provide guidance, perspective, and encouragement through every stage of your career.\n\nStay Curious and Keep Learning: The insurance landscape is constantly evolving. Staying open to new ideas, products, and market shifts will keep you ahead. Whether through formal training, industry news, or hands-on experience, continuous learning is one of the best ways to stay relevant and resilient.\n\nEmbrace Change with Confidence: The pace of change in this industry can be fast but viewing it as an opportunity rather than a threat is critical. Be open to new challenges, remain flexible in your thinking, and approach uncertainty with a problem-solving mindset. Growth often comes from the unfamiliar.\n\nIn a fast-moving and complex industry, these foundational habits—self-awareness, mentorship, learning, and a forward-thinking approach—can pave the way for long-term success and fulfilment."},"title":null,"openGraph":{"description":{"plain":"We take a minute to talk to Halo Liability Underwriter, Karmen Greaves about her journey in the industry and joining Halo just as the business really starts to hit its stride. \n"},"image":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1750134875/rhodian/banner/karmen-greeves-header_thumbnail__Karmen_Greeves_vq2c8z.webp","url2x":null,"thumbnails":{"card":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_480/v1750134875/rhodian/banner/karmen-greeves-header_thumbnail__Karmen_Greeves_vq2c8z.webp","url2x":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_960/v1750134875/rhodian/banner/karmen-greeves-header_thumbnail__Karmen_Greeves_vq2c8z.webp"},"bubble":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_64/v1750134875/rhodian/banner/karmen-greeves-header_thumbnail__Karmen_Greeves_vq2c8z.webp","url2x":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/c_limit,w_128/v1750134875/rhodian/banner/karmen-greeves-header_thumbnail__Karmen_Greeves_vq2c8z.webp"}}}},"type":{"id":"65d566d1f7d2d452331bf0b2","name":"Interview","slug":"interview","__typename":"PostType"},"published":"2026-03-26T04:49:24.27","authors":[{"openGraph":{"image":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1743564475/rhodian/person/simone-dalton_photo__Simone_Dalton_ng18v4.jpg","url2x":null}},"_schema":{"label":"Person","pluralLabel":"People"},"id":"67e22771775826076e069383","name":"Simone Dalton","slug":"simone-dalton","path":"/people/simone-dalton","organisation":null,"linkedin":null,"photo":{"id":"image_rhodian/person/simone-dalton_photo__Simone_Dalton_ng18v4","url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1743564475/rhodian/person/simone-dalton_photo__Simone_Dalton_ng18v4.jpg","url2x":null,"type":"image/jpeg"}},{"openGraph":{"image":{"url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1740626407/rhodian/person/karmen-greaves_photo__Karmen_Greaves_1_ksj3ch.webp","url2x":null}},"_schema":{"label":"Person","pluralLabel":"People"},"id":"67bfd6741b36eaa289b04d11","name":"Karmen Greaves","slug":"karmen-greaves","path":"/people/karmen-greaves","organisation":{"id":"65d566c0f7d2d452331beffa","name":"Halo"},"linkedin":"https://www.linkedin.com/in/karmen-greaves","photo":{"id":"image_rhodian/person/karmen-greaves_photo__Karmen_Greaves_1_ksj3ch","url":"https://res.cloudinary.com/shapeable/image/upload/v1740626407/rhodian/person/karmen-greaves_photo__Karmen_Greaves_1_ksj3ch.webp","url2x":null,"type":"image/webp"}}]}},{"data":{"id":"68f99ff5b30cbea8ccdff8de","name":"Property Risks in Australia: What Brokers Need to Watch","path":"/posts/property-risks-in-australia-what-brokers-need-to-watch","slug":"property-risks-in-australia-what-brokers-need-to-watch","__typename":"Post","_schema":{"label":"Post","pluralLabel":"Posts"},"intro":{"plain":"Australia’s property insurance market is under pressure. With construction costs rising by more than 30% over the past three years, Declared Values that were accurate pre-COVID are now significantly outdated. Brokers should be prompting clients to regularly review asset values, factoring in not just rebuild costs but also inflation, supply chain delays, and demolition expenses.\n\n**Climate and Catastrophe Exposures**\n\nBushfires, floods, and severe storms are striking with greater frequency and severity. The 2022–23 floods have been estimated to exceed $6 billion in Insured losses. If anything, the market is becoming a little harder to read. We’re seeing more situations where two insurers may produce premiums that look relatively close on paper, but when you get underneath the placement, the underwriting approach is quite different. The appetite might be different, the assumptions might be different. The intent to stay on the risk long term might be different. That’s particularly true across SME and mid-market business.\n\nThe details still matter. Things like:\n\n• How occupancy is viewed.\n\n• Whether BI assumptions still stack up.\n\n• Asset quality and protections.\n\n• Trade activities and subcontractor exposure.\n\n• Contractual arrangements.\n\n• Nat Cat exposure.\n\n• Claims experience and context.\n\nThese are still influencing outcomes, even where pricing appears more competitive. The conversation with brokers also feels like it’s changing. Over the last few years, a lot of discussions understandably centred around securing capacity and keeping placements together.\n\nNow there is more opportunity to step back and ask a different question: Is this still the right structure?\n\nBecause lower premium doesn’t automatically mean better placement. Sometimes it reflects genuine market improvement. Sometimes it reflects narrower appetite, different assumptions or a different view of the exposure. That distinction often only becomes obvious later. Soft markets can create good opportunities to improve placement outcomes, simplify structures and revisit cover that may have become more complex over time. But they also reward brokers who continue to challenge assumptions and understand how markets are thinking beneath the pricing.\n\nAt Halo, that’s still where we think the best outcomes come from.\n\nIf you have a Property or Liability placement where the market is giving mixed messages, send it through. \nWe’re always happy to work through the structure with you.\n\nhalounderwriting.com.au \n"},"title":null,"openGraph":{"description":{"plain":"There’s been a noticeable shift in parts of the Property and Liability market over recent months. But if it imports products directly, relabels them, modifies them or provides instructions for their use, its exposure may look more like that of a manufacturer. \n\nSimilarly, a contractor may outsource substantial parts of its work while remaining contractually responsible for the completed project.\n\nFor brokers, explaining the client’s actual role is generally far more useful than relying on a broad occupation description.\n\n**Products, territories and end use**\n\nProducts Liability can change significantly depending on where a product comes from, where it is sold and how it will be used.\n\nAn underwriter will want to understand:\n\n* Whether products are manufactured, imported, assembled or distributed\n* Where products and components are sourced\n* Whether the client alters or relabels them\n* Who the end users are\n* Whether products are exported, particularly to North America\n* What testing, quality assurance and traceability processes are in place\n* Whether the client has a product recall plan\n\nA relatively inexpensive component can still create a significant exposure if it forms part of a larger product or its failure could cause serious injury or property damage.\n\n**Contracts can change the picture**\n\nContracts are another reason apparently similar businesses can present very different risks.\n\nIndemnity clauses, warranties and hold-harmless provisions may expand the client’s obligations. Contracts can also make a business responsible for subcontractors, third-party property or work performed by someone else.\n\nIt is helpful for brokers to identify:\n\n* Who the client contracts with\n* What liability the client agrees to assume\n* Whether subcontractors are used and how they are managed\n* Whether the client takes control of third-party property\n* Any unusual insurance or indemnity requirements\n* Bringing these issues to the underwriter early makes it much easier to understand the real exposure and avoid surprises later in the placement.\n\n**Controls matter too**\n\nUnderwriting is not only about what could go wrong. It is also about how the client manages the risk.\n\nSupplier selection, quality control, staff training, maintenance, incident management and product recall planning can all provide important context.\n\nThe aim is not to present a perfect business. It is to show that the client understands its exposures and has sensible controls in place.\n\n**A better broker conversation**\n\nInstead of beginning with “What is the occupation?”, a more useful question can be:\n\nHow does this business create Liability exposure?\n\nThat conversation often uncovers issues that are not obvious from a proposal form. It can also identify positive features that deserve underwriting consideration.\n\nA strong submission should explain:\n\n* What the client does in practical terms\n* Where products and materials come from\n* Who the customers and end users are\n* Which territories the client operates in\n* What work is subcontracted\n* What contractual responsibilities are assumed\n* How the client manages incidents and previous claims\n* Occupation descriptions will always be part of Liability underwriting. But they should not replace a proper understanding of the business.\n\nThat is where a direct conversation between broker and underwriter adds value. The earlier it happens, the easier it is to identify the important exposures and work towards a sustainable placement.\n\nIf you have a Liability risk that would benefit from a closer look, talk to the Halo Liability team."},"title":null,"openGraph":{"description":{"plain":"A business description tells an underwriter what a client does.
